Deputy Head of Legal APAC

We are looking for a Deputy Head of Legal APAC.  The role will be expected to provide Volvo Cars with legal advice on all kind of legal matters, normally of complex and of global nature and often of major importance to the business as well as leading the APAC legal team.  This role will report to Head of Legal APAC. The primary geographical area of responsibility covers the Asia Pacific Region including China. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Documenting and contract drafting, negotiations with external parties and supervision of external legal advisors in matters requiring external specialist support.
  • Handling all matters in the region independently and assuming responsibilities advising relevant business functions through the APAC region.
  • Supporting the Head of APAC Legal and the global legal team in complex matters and supervising APAC legal team in daily legal operation.



Qualifications & Skills

  • Master of law or any other degree and/ or practice certificate required to practicing law in a relevant jurisdiction (with grades in the upper tier) in the APAC region.
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in practicing corporate and commercial law at a law firm and in-house, at international law firms and multinational companies respectively, with a period of working experience outside of China being a must.
  • Leadership experience for at least five years.
  • Experience in working in a global team.
  • Highly experienced and knowledgeable in all areas required to fulfill the key responsibilities.
  • M&A experience preferred. 
  • Fluent English and preferably native or fluent Mandarin (but not essential).
  • Has shown several cross-functional and/or global examples of driving and leading change in a business.
  • Willingness to travel, subject to COVID-19 restrictions and Volvo Cars’ travel policy.


Candidates should possess and where possible, demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Highly experienced in relevant legal areas and a professional specialist with high degree of autonomy.
  • Recognized as a person with a knowledge and experience beyond the normal level of a senior legal counsel.
  • Extensive experience in handling and leading complicated legal matters, including i.e. managing M&A projects and/or other business transactions.
  • Excellent analytical skills and highest ability not only to analyze and understand the details in a specific matter with high complexity, but also the ability to apply legal, business and financial aspects of relevance for a global organization that, to the greatest extent possible, meets the business objectives.
  • Proven ability to work towards high-level objectives where neither task nor ways of fulfilling the objectives or how to solve the matters are defined.
  • Actively identifies, drive and delivers improvements and change.
  • Has extensive experience in providing a global organization with independent legal advice and support without supervision or guidance.
  • Has extensive experience of providing advice to senior and top management.
  • Highly focus on timely delivery without any supervision or control being required.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills in resolving conflicts and extensive experience in leading, mentoring and coaching other legal counsels.
  • Excellent team player with a highly customer oriented and service minded mindset and the ability to apply a “helicopter” perspective when appropriate.
  • Proven excellent ability to gain respect from internal clients and external stakeholders and counter-parties.
  • Highest possible level of integrity, accountability and commitment and with a highly proactive, commercial and customer oriented approach when fulfilling the tasks and duties.
  • Very well-developed communication and presentation skills as well as being an experienced negotiator.
  • Excellent ability to translate legal advice to actions that deliver business value and tangible benefits.
