Thesis Work - Experimenting with frame replication and elimination for reliability

Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars
Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

Background
The increasing reliance on Ethernet-based communication in modern vehicles has highlighted the need for robust safety-critical data transmission. The IEEE 802.1CB-2017 standard introduced Frame Replication and Elimination for Reliability (FRER), aiming to mitigate faults that could compromise vehicle safety. This thesis seeks to investigate the effectiveness of FRER by developing a simulation model that replicates various Ethernet topologies, simulates standardized traffic flows, and intentionally introduces faults on these networks. Through this analysis, we aim to quantify the impact of FRER on overall communication reliability, uptime, and performance in different vehicular scenarios.

Scope
A successful candidate will create a simulation environment using open-source tools (such as OMNeT++, network simulator – NS-3). The proposed simulation model will focus on evaluating the effectiveness of Frame Replication and Elimination for Reliability (FRER) in various Ethernet-based vehicle communication topologies. The study will consider different network configurations, including star, ring, and mesh topologies, as well as typical automotive traffic flows. Faults will be introduced into these networks to simulate real-world scenarios, allowing the analysis of FRER's impact on overall system reliability, uptime, and performance.
