Thesis work - Vibration based condition monitoring of Electric Drive Units
Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars
Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. Through your thesis work you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!
About this opportunity - Background
You're about to embark on a challenging and impactful research journey in the field of mechanical engineering and electromobility. Our company is offering a unique master´s opportunity focused on analysis of structure borne vibration signals in endurance testing. VCC uses specially designed condition monitoring systems, designed to monitor for previously known vibration signatures as well as actively learn and act upon differences in overall vibration levels on a test object. If a component experiences a change in behavior the system is designed to stop the test before serious damage occurs. The system is a key component in our BEV driveline testing and development. If you are a passionate master’s student with a strong technical background, have affinity for testing, data analysis and creative thinking, this is the perfect project for you.
Scope of the thesis work
Market competition in electromobility is growing tougher every year. This drives the manufacturers to create new products faster than ever before. This has resulted in increase in performance in the drivetrain and thus higher wear and stresses on the mechanical components. Analysis and verification of these components is vital to secure a safe and reliable product for the end customer. Continuous vibration condition monitoring enables the possibility of analyzing failures in their early stages by stopping the tests before catastrophic damage occur.
Objectives of the thesis:
• Literature study: current state-of-the-art practices for vibration condition monitoring of rotating machinery. Signal processing and classification of fault modes. Scrutiny of currently available condition monitoring hardware and software
• Application of state-of-the-art practices in currently available hardware
• Test setup: Definition of test object, system setup
• Test data processing ongoing test
• Post test data processing
• Post test data processing from external supplier system test data
• Create handbook for VCC internal usage, how to setup system at test start, process for post-processing and fault mode detection
What you'll bring
We are seeking a passionate master’s student/s with a strong technical foundation, proficiency in analysis, coding and testing. Additionally, attention to detail, a research-oriented mindset, and a commitment to the project are crucial. If you fit this profile and are ready to make a difference in the realm of mechanical engineering, we would like to hear from you.
This is a unique opportunity to stand out in the world of research and contribute to the advancement of mechanical engineering and development of new measurement systems. Join us and be part of this exciting thesis project.
