About this opportunity - Background

This Master thesis work will be carried out within the Thermal & Energy Management Section, which is a part of the Energy Department within Propulsion & Energy Unit, and has the responsibility for the Thermal Management of the complete vehicle. You will work with different teams within Thermal Management, who take control of system and controls design, simulations, control implementations, and verification in different environments such as rigs or vehicles. You will also collaborate with other teams in other departments such as Electric Driveline, High Voltage Battery or Climate.

Scope of the thesis work

Future Thermal Management systems are becoming increasingly complex, requiring advanced control strategies to manage multiple circuits, operating modes, and energy sources efficiently. The goal of this thesis is to develop a controller architecture for next-generation Thermal Management systems that combines the strengths of previous generations while introducing new features and improvements.

 

The architecture will be implemented in Simulink, with the capability to:

  • Interface with GT-SUITE models for system-level simulations.
  • Support Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing for real-time validation.
  • Include mode optimization and control logics to enhance system efficiency and adaptability.

 

Be designed as a candidate for integration into the vehicle software, ensuring practical applicability for future production systems.

 

The outcome will be a scalable control framework that can serve as a foundation for future thermal management solutions.

You also go the extra mile to achieve what you intend to. The project is aimed for two students, with presential work at Volvo Cars office. We are looking for people with the following qualifications:

 

  • Master students within Mobility/Automotive Engineering, System Controls and Mechatronics, Applied Mechanics, or similar education.
  • Experience with GT-Suite and Simulink is meritorious.
  • Fluent in English, written and spoken.

Duration

  • The work will start January 15, 2026 (Dates can be flexible within 1 week).
  • The duration for this thesis work is 6 months.
  • 30 ECTS in agreement with your Thesis Advisor at the University
  • This thesis is to be conducted by 2 Students working in a pair.
