Thesis work - Design and implementation of HV to LV DC-DC converter control firmware
Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars
Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. Through your thesis work you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!
About this opportunity - Background
Within Propulsion & Energy unit, we belong to Power Electronics department with the key product design responsibilities of traction Inverters (DC-AC), onboard chargers (AC-DC) & DC-DC converters. Currently, we are working on our third-generation power electronics products that goes into fully electric platform SPA3 with the forthcoming all-electric new EX60 as a first car on this platform. We are constantly working to improve our power electronics product designs in terms of efficiency, power density, weight and cost with enhanced quality from one generation to the next. We have highly skilled team members in each of the technical domain such as power electronics systems, hardware and software designs. Most importantly, we prioritize the safety of the customers when using our vehicles and we apply this fundamental requirement to all our product designs.
Scope of the thesis work
In Power Electronics Converters, Control Firmware is essential to achieve Critical Design requirements such as Regulation, Efficiency and Dynamic response etc. And thus, we are looking for motivated and technically inclined students to contribute to the Development, Implementation and Optimization of Control Firmware for a selected DC-DC converter topology provided by Volvo on Thesis Topic named ‘Development & implementation of HV to LV DCDC converter control firmware’. The objective is to meet stringent performance requirements such as voltage regulation, high efficiency, and fast dynamic response, while ensuring minimal CPU Load and execution time through an effective control strategy.
Work Scope Includes:
1) Control Algorithm Design
• Develop and Implement control algorithms with respect to the specified converter topology.
• Validate the control strategy using the provided plant model in MATLAB/Simulink.
2) Firmware Implementation
• Implement Basic Software (BSW) and Application Software (ASW) using company-supplied low-level drivers for the selected microcontroller platform.
• Translate the validated control algorithm into embedded code suitable for real-time execution.
3) Hardware Integration and Testing
• Deploy the firmware on evaluation kits provided by the company.
• Perform functional and performance testing using oscilloscopes and other lab instruments.
• Optimize control parameters and firmware execution based on test results.
What you'll bring
• Students with Embedded Engineering background
• Strong First Principles in Embedded systems, and control engineering.
• Strong Background in C Programming and Low-Level Drivers Knowledge.
• Strong Knowledge of Micro Controller Peripherals and configuration specifically GTM, ADC, IO etc
• Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink, and basic electrical circuit analysis.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a technical development environment.
Students should typically be available partially on-site.
Duration
• The work will start in January 2026
• The duration for this thesis work is 20 weeks.
• 30 ECTS (Master academic credits) in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University
• This thesis is to be conducted by 1 Student.
