Thesis work - Design and development of high-power dense Gate Driver Power Supply

Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars

Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. Through your thesis work you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

About this opportunity - Background

Volvo Cars commitment in electrification leads us to take the next step in the development of Electric Propulsion Technology - Power Electronics. The Power Electronics department delivers the best-in class inhouse power conversion designs within Electric Vehicle propulsion system such as DC-AC, AC-DC & DC-DC converters. Currently, we are working on our next generation traction inverter architectures for future vehicle platforms to optimize the efficiency, power density, weight & cost.

Achieving a high-power density and low cost are two of the most critical factors in the development of modern traction inverters. To address this challenge, we're developing isolated gate driver power supplies using advanced PCB-based planar transformer technology. We are seeking a passionate student to contribute to this effort. This role will involve in-depth simulation studies using multi-physics tools like Ansys and the PCB design software Altium Designer. Following the simulation phase, you will have the opportunity to work on the prototype development. This is a chance to apply your skills to a real-world engineering problem and make a significant impact on a cutting-edge product.

Scope of the thesis work

We will conduct detailed analysis and development of a gate driver power supply that uses a PCB-embedded planar transformer. This project focuses on using simulations to identify and overcome design limitations, specifically by reducing parasitic elements in the PCB to improve performance.

What you'll bring

Students with electrical engineering background with strong first principles design approach in power electronics and good simulation knowledge who like work in advance engineering projects are welcome.

Students should typically be available partially on-site.

Duration

•    The work will start in January 2026
•    The duration for this thesis work is 20 weeks.
•    30 ECTS (Master academic credits) in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University
•    This thesis is to be conducted by 2 Students working in pair.
