Thesis Worker - Optimization for Crashworthiness in Early Phases

Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars

Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization, you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business-critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

Background

Finding weight efficient and robust design for crashworthiness is challenging. Existing tools for parametric geometries and morphing of finite element models have limitations when it comes to design space flexibility. State of art tools start to have stronger coupling between CAD and CAE improving the early concept development phases.

Scope

Study the potential of using parametric geometry modelling (Catia/3DX) and multidisciplinary optimization (LS-Opt/LS-Dyna) to improve crashworthiness and weight efficient design.

Demo potential of parametric modelling in Dassault 3DX to support early shape optimization for crashworthiness.

Activities

•            Generation of parametric models in 3DX

•            Definition of load cases and requirements

•            Define optimization setup.

•            Perform optimization to find weight efficient design for crashworthiness.

•            Study process of how to go from concept model to final CAD

•            Give recommendation on how implicit parametric modeling in 3DX can support early conceptual optimization for crashworthiness

Do you fit the profile

Finite element, structural optimization, CAD
