Thesis Worker- Knowledge Graphs and Agentic AI for Industrial Operations
Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars
Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. Through your thesis work you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!
About this opportunity - Background
At Volvo Cars, Industrial Operations plays a central role in driving efficiency, innovation, and sustainability across our global manufacturing and supply chain. As the volume and complexity of enterprise data continue to grow, we see a strong need to better connect, contextualize, and reason over this information.
Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are an emerging approach that can provide a structured, semantic representation of enterprise data, enabling advanced search, reasoning, and decision-making. At the same time, agentic AI frameworks (autonomous or semi-autonomous AI systems that use external tools, memory, and reasoning capabilities) are rapidly evolving and could leverage KGs to support smarter, data-driven operations.
This thesis explores the intersection of these two fields to shape the next generation of data intelligence at Volvo Cars.
Scope of the thesis work
The work will focus on two main areas:
1. Knowledge Graph Construction
- Investigate how to model and integrate enterprise data (e.g., procurement, production, trade) into a knowledge graph.
- Evaluate suitable technologies, frameworks, and ontologies for building and maintaining such a graph.
- Address challenges such as data harmonization, scalability, and governance.
2. Utilization in Agentic Frameworks
- Explore how the knowledge graph can be integrated into agentic AI frameworks.
- Design and test use cases.
- Assess potential business impact in the Industrial Operations.
The thesis will combine literature study, proof of concept development, and evaluation. The outcome should be both academic (methodological insights, research contribution) and practical (poc/demo, recommendations for future work).
What you'll bring
- A background in Computer Science, Data Science, AI, or related fields.
- Strong interest in knowledge representation, semantic technologies, and applied AI.
- Good coding skills in Python, and/or Typescript.
- Familiarity with graph technologies is a plus.
- An analytical mindset, curiosity for exploring emerging technologies, and willingness to work hands-on with data.
