Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars

Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

Background
Handling and steering performances characterizes the driving DNA of a vehicle. It comprises of a complex vehicle performance matrix that describes the agility, predictability, controllability, steerability and stability.

When designing the chassis systems from the overall planned characteristics of the car, it is important to consider all the involved vehicle performance matrix simultaneously [1]. The planned characteristics of the car are also called key performance indicators (KPI), the target of which constitute the DNA of an automotive brand. Several KPI requirements are contradictory and identifying these factors and their functional region is a critical task. The synthesis can be performed using simple models to choose wheel suspensions, steering and braking systems [1].

The same concept can be cascaded to tyres.  Tyres play a critical role for passenger cars, as they are the sole interface between the vehicle and the road. They have direct impact on vehicle performance, including ride quality and handling behaviour. The dimension choice, the design construction, the rubber compound all influence the force-moment characteristics of the tyre. The tyre properties that satisfy the vehicle KPI target are considered feasible. These set of tyre properties constitute the tyre design space.

Cascading the vehicle KPI to tyre KPI in early phase of vehicle design allows for an interactive chassis-tyre development in the early phase, create synergy across vehicle platforms and reduce complexity. In this thesis work, we want to cascade vehicle targets to tire characteristics and create a design space of feasible tire characteristics.

Scope
The thesis will include:
1.    Literature survey
2.    Understanding and deriving vehicle KPI
3.    Analytical cascading vehicle KPI to tyre design space
4.    Performing sensitivity study on vehicle KPI with respect to tyre properties using stochastic approach
5.    Compute tyre design space using multi-disciplinary multi-objective optimization tool
6.    Verify the analytically derived tyre design space with that from optimization tool

Objectives
Cascading vehicle targets to feasible tire characteristics

Your contribution is our future
The successful candidates are expected to be master students from mathematics, engineer, mechanical engineering and/or vehicle engineering. You should be self-motivated and explorative. You have a strong mathematical and analytical background and an interest in vehicle dynamics. The thesis requires the students to be physically presented in Gothenburg, Volvo Cars Corporation

Duration
•    The work will start January 2023 and continue 20 weeks.
•    1 to 2 students. This diploma work gives 30 points/student.
