Thesis Worker: Automotive inverter modulation strategies

Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars

Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization, you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business-critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

Background

Inverters are used in automotive to be able to control electrical machines to produce the desired speed and torque to propel the vehicle. In order to produce the desired quantities some modulation strategy needs to be implemented. A trade off needs to be done in terms of switching frequency and strategy depending on operating area to balance torque ripple, NVH and system losses.

Scope

Objective:

•        Investigate and implement at least two different modulation strategies including discontinuous space vector pulse width modulation and overmodulation

Activities:

•        Literature review on different modulation strategies suitable for automotive inverters

•        Make a discrete controller, plant model and inverter model in MATLAB-SIMULINK

•        Implement the different strategies and compare the results in terms of efficiency.

•        Final report which describes findings and when it is preferred to use the different strategies.
