The Electric Drive Software department at Volvo Cars is proud of being one of the most successful players within SW development for Electric Vehicles. We are responsible for delivering system solution and SW functionality for the Inverters in our electrified vehicles. Our vision is to deliver the best and most innovated functions to the market and continuously evolve our Software platform and never compromise on the Safety aspects

We are looking for someone who would like to be part of a team working with ensuring safe operation of an electric propulsion system.

For this particular task, we foresee working with signal processing and modeling of the resolver signals. The purpose of the thesis work is to evaluate an alternative way to calculate the speed and the position of the electrical machine, without using the conventional RDC chip.



  • Resolver modeling using Matlab/Simulink.
  • Identify typical deviations from the ideal function (e.g. simulate production variation)
  • Fault injection of basic fault modes, to enable monitoring of these
  • Develop fault detection monitors
  • Preferably, the models developed can serve as base for further implementation



We are looking for students in the final year of their Master Program, who are specializing within Electrical, Electronics, Controls Theory, Signals & Systems or Mechatronics. We see that you have experience and knowledge in signal processing and Simulink/Matlab.  You should not be afraid to work hands on an have ability to set up and do measurements. We believe that you have an ability to transfer monitor algorithm to model based design and test environment to enable off line data simulation.



  • The duration of the Thesis is approx. 4-5 Months.
  • The Thesis starts in spring 2021, to be discussed
  • 30 ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University
  • This thesis is to be conducted by either 1 or 2 Students working in pair
  • Office, computer and software will be arranged by University and Volvo Cars.
