Thesis Work - Roll motion control with full active system
Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars
Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. Through your thesis work you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!
About this opportunity - Background
Are you interested in working with full active suspension systems (FAS)? Here is an opportunity for you to practice both programming knowledge and DIY skills. We have cluster work that you can participate in during your thesis work. This includes developing FAS control functions in a simulation environment. You will be able to see how your control algorithms work in real car applications.
Scope of the thesis work
Roll motion control algorithm
• Develop control algorithms that can handle certain scenarios, for example, anti-roll motion at a certain speed. Test the algorithms in our simulation environment to verify your algorithms.
• Advanced control model development involving high-dimensional operational states such as static load, steering wheel angle. The algorithm should also ensure a smooth transit behaviour when entering and leaving the corner.
Test your algorithm in the car
• Deploy your control model in a physical car. Make sure the algorithm can handle the same roll motion control as in the simulation environment.
Objective <or Research Question>
• Build up control functions and verify them with plant models in one of our simulation environments
• Advanced function development involves multiple states
• Test the algorithm in a real car application
Deliverables
• Build a control model and show the improved roll motion compared to passive solutions. Demonstrate the algorithm in a real car with some pre-defined scenarios.
What you'll bring
• Self-directed working skill
• Simulink/Matlab
• CarMaker
• Knowledgeable of Control algorithms (PI, MPC, RL)
Duration
• The work will start in January 2026, exact dates to be discussed
• 30 Academic credits in agreement with your Thesis Advisor at the University
• This thesis is to be conducted by 2 Students working in pair.
