About the Thesis Work
This thesis work will be carried out within the Department of Vehicle Motion and Climate, which is a part of VCC´s Research and Development organization. The ART (Agile release train) Road contact is responsible of developing Tyre Monitoring functions. This thesis work will be a part of an advance engineering project within condition monitoring and predictive maintenance of mechanical failures on chassis components (ex: Wheel imbalance, Wheel out-of-roundness, Wheel alignment (camber / toe), Broken spring, Leaking damper, Broken wheel bearings).


The major aim of this master thesis is to investigative and to explore the possibility of adding external sensor hardware (ex: accelerometers, camera, microphone, radar or other proposed sensor hardware) to the vehicle to evaluate and improve condition monitoring and predictive maintenance analysis systems at Volvo cars.

Description & Tasks

  • Literature study on Condition monitoring and Predictive maintenance system solutions.
  • Benchmarking of existing solutions in the market.
  • Explore and propose additional external sensor hardware to improve Condition monitoring and predictive maintenance systems.
  • Analysis of new sensor data and develop decision-based prediction algorithm.
  • Develop a system as prototype to validate the proposed solution.


  • Master’s degree students in: Computer Science, Machine learning systems, Control and Mechatronics, Vehicle Engineering, Automotive Engineering or similar.
  • The student(s) preferably has a history with MATLAB and Simulink.
  • Knowledge of Signal Processing applied estimation is preferred. Deep knowledge in algorithms and System design.
  • Knowledge of Vehicle/Sensor Data Acquisition will be meritorious.
  • Self-motivated and meticulous in your problem-solving approach.
  • Communication skills are important since information input will be needed from several different parts of the department.

Period: 1 semester, 30 ECTS points
