At Vehicle Energy and Motion Control, our purpose is to develop and deliver the most energy efficient and situation adopted ride and drive experience. Evaluating driver input, surrounding information (e.g. camera, radar and route data) and Autonomous Drive request, as well as vehicle state sensor input, our software (mainly inhouse developed) coordinates the different actuators (engine, motors, brakes, steering) to fulfill our purpose and balance vehicle attributes. 

 

Background 
There is currently a strong trend towards battery electric vehicles (BEVs) within the automotive industry in response to rising awareness of global warming and the poor air quality in many major cities. The main disadvantage of a BEV, compared to a conventional vehicle, is the limited driving range and the long re-charge times. To diminish the associated range-anxiety effect it is crucial to have a navigation system that considers vehicle energy consumption in order to facilitate intelligent trip planning, where charging stops can be inserted at appropriate places along the route if needed. 
 

Scope 
In this master thesis, you will investigate how to predict the energy consumption of a BEV when a destination is set in the navigation system. The energy consumption for the route will be computed based on the available map data, using a pre-defined vehicle energy model (VEM) API developed jointly by Volvo Cars and Google. The primary task will be to investigate how to parameterize the VEM model, based on historical driving data, in such a way that the overall prediction error is minimized. The method used to parameterize the model can be based on: statistical methods, machine learning or optimization; depending on student background and research interests. 
 

Profile 
· M.Sc. in Engineering physics, Electrical engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or similar. 
· Good knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink and programming experience, e.g. C, C++, JAVA. 
· Courses with good grades in at least one of the following topics: optimization, statistics or machine learning. 
· Analytical and independent. 
· Have a resident permit in Sweden or be a citizen in an EU/Schengen member state. 
· Driver’s license (B) is a merit.

Duration 
· 20 weeks / 30 ECTS. 
· Starting date: January-February 2021 (Flexible). Estimated end date: Summer 2021
