Background

The Electric Drive Software department at Volvo Cars is proud of being one of the most successful players within SW development for Electric Vehicles. We are responsible for delivering system solution and SW functionality for the Inverters in our electrified vehicles. Our vision is to deliver the best and most innovated functions to the market and continuously evolve our Software platform and never compromise on the safety aspects.

 

Scope

The inverter offers the ability to precisely control the currents in the electrical machine, and these currents creates magnetic field inside the machines which leads to mechanical deformation of the machine which gives rise to acoustic noise. By selecting currents with specific frequencies, the transfer function from currents to perceived noise can then be manipulated to the extent that it will sound like known piece of music.

The objective is to make an electrical machine controller which will make the electrical drivetrain play simple music. The main objective is to do it at stand-still without producing any net torque, but it is also desirable to be able to do this while moving without impacting the (average) machine torque produced.

 

Activities we for see that should be done during this thesis work are:

  • Derive electric machine controller strategies which can produce variable machine currents while not producing torque.
  • Simulate derived control strategies to verify validity of proposed method.
  • Test derived strategies on a real hardware to acoustic performance.
  • Evaluate the strategies which is the most suitable or effective in performing the task.
  • Final report which describes findings and the selected control strategy and potential issues or limitations of the method.

 

Profile

We believe that the suitable students have studied electrical power engineering or control theory with knowledge within electrical machines. Since the controller is expected to be derived in Matlab/Simulink experience using this SW is required. As the perceived acoustic noise is very difficult to model, we are looking for students which has a hands-on approach to implementing the derived concepts on real hardware and do measurements, fault-tracing and appropriate adaptations where needed.

 

This thesis work will need you to be at Volvo Cars site in Gothenburg for specific activities.

 

Duration

  • The duration of the Thesis is approx. 4-5 Months.
  • The Thesis starts in spring 2021, to be discussed
  • 30 ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University
  • This thesis is to be conducted by either 1 or 2 Students working in pair
  • Office, computer and software will be arranged by University and Volvo Cars.
