Thesis Work - Performance improvement of IPMSM with sustainable materials

Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars

Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. Through your thesis work you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

About this opportunity - Background

The Electric Drive department 97700 at Volvo Cars is proud of being responsible for designing and delivering system solutions and functionality for the inverters, electric machine, and transmission, in our electrified vehicles.
Our vision is to become “Leading in electrification” and we are aiming to contribute to world class energy efficiency, E-machine functionality, sustainability, customer satisfaction and best performance and drivability, to all our future products.

Scope of the thesis work

This assignment focuses on the design and development of an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (IPMSM) which targets improved performance. The improved performance includes usage of heavy rare earth free magnets for machine design, making the machine safe from system faults (including active short circuit studies), utilizing better electro-steel material (possibly Grain oriented material), and reduction of AC losses by utilization of Litz wire windings. In addition, classical targets in terms of Torque and power ability as well as low losses are of course of high importance. FEM software: Ansys, JMAG or Comsol, is to be used during the project conduction. The work offers the opportunity to gain practical experience in electromagnetic field analysis and machine design alongside knowledge in material properties, while contributing to cutting-edge research in the field of IPMSMs technology.

This thesis is intended to investigate IPMSM design topology for improving electric machine performance using sustainable materials. The conclusion of the assignment should include proposal of complete machine design which is resistive to system level faults and minimized environmental load unit (ELU).

Activities we foresee that should be done during this thesis work are:
1.    Literature study.
2.    Work content as described above.
3.    Production of a final report and presentation.

What you'll bring

You are studying M.Sc. Electrical Power engineering, or similar. Understanding in Electric machines, finite element modelling, knowledge on materials, hands on MATLAB/Python are highly valuable.
