Thesis Work - Leveraging AGI for Automated Requirement-to-Test Mapping in Automotive Embedded System

Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars
Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. Through your thesis work you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

About this opportunity - Background

At Vehicle Engineering, our responsibility spans the entire chassis, interior, climate, body & exterior functions, mechanical Integration, and a range of vehicle attributes with impact on design and customer experience of our complete product. Across these domains and all development cycles, we will lead an effective delivery operation on a complete level in close sync with other Engineering units, functions, and stakeholders across the company.

This thesis work is within the area of Software Factory & Release.

Automotive systems are becoming increasingly complex, with numerous embedded ECUs that must function reliably. A key challenge in verification and validation (V&V) is ensuring that all system requirements are thoroughly tested.

Today, mapping requirements to test cases is mostly manual, demanding significant effort and expertise while risking errors and incomplete coverage.
Advances in Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) open new opportunities for automating this process. With its ability in reasoning and semantic analysis, AGI can support requirement analysis, improve traceability, and enhance test coverage efficiency.

The aim of this thesis project is to explore and prototype the use of AGI to support requirement-to-test mapping in the automotive domain. The objectives are:
1.    Requirement Analysis with AGI
•    Investigate how AGI can parse and interpret natural language system requirements.
•    Extract key requirement elements relevant for embedded system testing.

2.    Test Case Understanding
•    Analyze test case source code.
•    Utilize system signal definition documents (DBC, LDF, ARXML) to interpret the test logic and test signals.

3.    Requirement-to-Test Mapping
•    Develop a method for AGI to trace requirements to corresponding test code.
•    Identify which requirement elements are covered and which are missing.

4.    Evaluation
•    Measure accuracy, completeness, and efficiency of AGI-based mapping compared to manual mapping.
•    Assess the potential of AGI as a decision-support tool in automotive testing.

Scope of the thesis work

•    Requirement engineering
•    Test coverage analysis
•    Automotive embedded systems validation
•    AI-driven automation (AGI applications in engineering)

What you'll bring

The ideal candidate will combine a background in computer science and machine learning with practical experience in AGI programming and demonstrate a strong interest in applying these skills to real-world engineering problems.

Duration

•    Tentative proposed thesis work period: 19th January 2026 to 26th of June 2026 (dates can be flexible with +/- 7 days)
•    Academic credits: equivalent to 30 ECTS
•    Number of students: 1-2 students per project (2 preferred)
