About this opportunity - Background
"As a part of the next generation Process Design for Volvo Cars Manufacturing facilities, we are developing 3D Mechanical Design of our manufacturing equipment. These to be a part of the virtual validation and proof of manufacturability, in front of physical builds of our Car programs.
Today we spend a lot of resources on designing fixtures in our new car programs. And we are always looking for ways to enhance and optimize our ways of work.
At Volvo Cars Manufacturing Engineering, we would like to explore the possibilities of using AI to generate Equipment design based on historical manufacturing data, new products and a set of Global Design standards and Equipment Libraries."
Scope of the thesis work
We are seeking two motivated master’s students to explore the use of AI methodology in the development of Body in White (BIW) Manufacturing equipment. This thesis will focus on developing a proof-of-concept model that integrates cutting-edge technologies in 3D design and identifies the potential benefits for cost, project leadtime and quality in our car programs.
Task Description:
• Develop a proof of concept AI algorithm to optimize the 3D Mechanical design within Manufacturing Engineering.
• Identify suitable input data, and how to use it, for the model. (e.g. Catia and Teamcenter)
• Conduct a comprehensive analysis to create a business case for the proposed model within Manufacturing Engineering.
• Stretched target: Fully incorporated AI tool for Mechanical Design.
What you´ll bring
MSc programs within Data science / AI / Mechatronics, or related fields.
Basic knowledge in 3D virtual modelling is a merit.

• The duration for this thesis work is 20 weeks.
• 30 ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University
• This thesis is to be conducted by 2 Students working in pair.
