We are working Electric Drive Transmission Design and we have the responsibility to design and develop the electric drive units within Volvo and other brands in the group such as Polestar.

We have the ambitious goal to be Leading within electrification in this highly competitive industry.

Sustainability is one of the three pillars of our company purpose, this thesis will be a key to understand how we can design more sustainable products, as we recognize that this is essential for our future success. Our engineering work can make a real difference, both within the company, and to our planet and society. We aim to lead our industry in Climate Action, Circular Economy and Ethical and Responsible Business.

We believe that by focusing on these areas we will make our company more profitable and attractive, while reducing our environmental impact, and improving the lives of both our employees and those within our supply chain.


In this master thesis you will get to investigate how to design parts with circular economy in mind. The goal is to get a more comprehensive understanding of where in our design process (from designing parts to aftermarket and remanufacturing) we can improve in order to become a more sustainable car manufacturer. The intention is to define guidelines and directions of how to evaluate our design process in regards of sustainability.

The scope of the thesis can be adjusted to suit your master's programme and interests, and you will get to formulate the final research questions in cooperation with us.  


Areas to investigate could for example be:

  • How to design for recyclability and remanufacturing
  • How to ensure a sustainable aftermarket
  • Business case: Which recycled materials are most suitable for our parts, and which materials are most beneficial to recycle.
  • Business case: What parts are most suitable to design for remanufacturing


We are looking for master students that has a great interest in this area. If you feel that you are from a relevant area of education, you have a curious mindset and want to be a part of a better future then we want you to apply.



  • The work will start in January 2021, to be discussed
  • The duration for this thesis work is 20 weeks.
  • 30 ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University
  • This thesis is to be conducted by 2 Students working in pair.
