Staff Engineer - Developer Experience
Software that makes a difference
We're bringing big and bold digital visions to life. For this we want to welcome more curious and creative engineers that want to create change - one line of high-quality code at a time. Our transformation isn't for everyone, but if you're excited about solving the technological challenges facing the auto industry, then this role could be for you.
Let's introduce ourselves
The mission for Developer Experience is to provide an internal developer platform with few, meaningful, opinionated choices, that makes it easy for software developers at Volvo Cars to own their products end-to-end.
The Developer Experience team develops a platform of infrastructure tools and technology to help our software developers iterate faster and concern themselves less with infrastructure implications. This platform is growing fast and allowing Volvo Cars to step change its developer productivity. As a Staff Engineer you will have a core role in defining, designing, and gelling new and existing technologies into a robust end-to-end developer platform that enable software engineers across the organisation to create and maintain products safer and faster.
We have a first set of the platform in production and are during the upcoming year greatly enhancing the value it will be able to, and you’ll be joining us at a time when you can really have a great impact and help us set the tone for the next chapter in our company's history.
What you'll do
As a Staff Engineer, you will have a leading role and support committed cross-functional teams in defining technical standards and strategies. You will support, and mentor platform engineers in delivering on the strategic technical product roadmap that you help create. In collaboration with Product Managers, Engineering Managers and Engineering teams you will among other things, deliver analysis, architectural patterns and hands-on development when required.
In this role you will:
• Provide Technical Leadership across the developer experience domain
• Provide architectural guidance and set technical strategies together with product and technical leaders inside and outside the department
• Advocate and advance modern, engineering practices.
• Ensure the solutions are scalable, sustainable, secure, architecturally sound, and technical debt is both incurred consciously and repaid in a reasonable time.
• Be an active member and contributor to tech-steering and leadership group.
• Foster a culture of healthy conversation across teams to ensure alignment
What you'll bring
We are looking for you who has a genuine interest in developer platforms, and technology. As we are bringing together different products into one seamless platform, we are looking for a technical leader who can help the teams converge their different scopes by creating clarity and buy-in for our technical direction both internally in our organization and towards our customers.
Since this platform is being adopted by Volvo Cars, a large portion of the time needs to go into understanding the everyday challenges of the vast set of software developers at Volvo (with the support of product managers). You are comfortable in leading in ambiguity and you lean on collaboration to solve complex problems. This is the role for you with extensive experience within platform engineering.
You also have
• Experience working with highly visible projects in an international environment.
• Experience working with Internal Developer Platforms, GitOps, declarative infra and CI/CD orchestration
• Ability to collaborate with technical and business stakeholders across the enterprise
• Experience of a large scale transformation in a previous company, and know-how to navigate that.
• Ability to collaborate with all levels of engineering-, product- and data leaders to build outstanding products.
