Software Engineer

Software, the fuel for mobility

We bring bold digital visions to life. So we’re on the lookout for more curious and creative engineers who want to create change – one line of high-quality code at a time. Our transformation isn't for everyone, but if you're excited about solving the leading-edge technological challenges facing the auto industry, then let’s talk about your next move.

Let's introduce ourselves

CI, Build & Test is part of Volvo Cars' Software Factory. We build and operate the platforms that thousands of engineers use every day to build, test and deliver software for the next generation of Volvo cars.

The Zuul CI/CD Infrastructure team owns the systems behind continuous integration at Volvo Cars. This includes CI/CD orchestration, cloud and on-prem infrastructure, build and test environments, developer tooling, observability and automation.

This is not a collection of pipelines for separate products. It is a distributed system in its own right, supporting thousands of developers and processing tens of thousands of build and test workloads every day.

Our technology landscape includes AWS, Kubernetes, Zuul, Gerrit, Jenkins, Artifactory, Bazel, Buildbarn, SIL and HIL infrastructure, together with a range of internally developed systems and services.

We are looking for engineers who enjoy understanding complex systems, solving difficult technical problems and building platforms that need to be fast, reliable and scalable.

What you'll do

As a Senior DevOps Engineer in the Zuul CI/CD Infrastructure team, you will develop, operate and evolve one of Volvo Cars' most critical engineering platforms, enabling thousands of developers to continuously build, test and deliver software.

You will work across software development, infrastructure and operations, building the systems, tooling and automation that power continuous integration at scale.

Zuul sits at the centre of our orchestration and project-gating model, but the role extends far beyond CI tooling. You will work with distributed systems involving cloud and on-prem infrastructure, compute provisioning and autoscaling, networking, artefact management, build acceleration and test infrastructure.

This role is not primarily about configuring pipelines. It is about developing and operating the platform that makes large-scale continuous integration possible.

What you'll bring

We are looking for an experienced software or DevOps engineer with strong infrastructure and operational understanding. That said, we do not expect everyone to match the role description perfectly. If you have the right mindset, strong technical skills, and experience from complex engineering environments, we would still be very interested in hearing from you.

Experience with Zuul is valuable, but not required. We are more interested in your ability to understand, build and operate complex systems than your experience with a specific tool.

You likely have experience in several of these areas:

  • Software engineering, programming and scripting
  • CI/CD and modern software development workflows
  • Linux
  • Cloud infrastructure and container platforms
  • Infrastructure as Code
  • Distributed systems and platform engineering
  • Networking, compute and storage
  • Troubleshooting across software and infrastructure layers
  • Observability, metrics and logging
  • Scalability, resilience and reliability

You may come from software engineering, platform engineering, SRE, cloud infrastructure, developer productivity or another infrastructure-focused engineering background.

Technologies and areas you may encounter:

  • AWS and Kubernetes
  • Linux and Python
  • Terraform and Ansible
  • Zuul and Jenkins
  • Git and Gerrit
  • JFrog Artifactory
  • Bazel and Buildbarn
  • Autoscaling and dynamic compute provisioning
  • Observability and analytics
  • Networking across cloud and on-prem environments
  • SIL and HIL infrastructure

Experience with Zuul is rare and therefore not a requirement. Experience building systems that need to remain fast, reliable and scalable under heavy load is.
