Green Propulsion and Thermal Management are increasingly important areas for Volvo Cars to become leading in Electrification. Thermal Management have a key role in energy efficient propulsion by optimizing control towards customer functions and balancing attributes. The systems are getting more advanced and complex including different temperature levels, cooling down, heating up, transfer/transport and store heat for electric motors, battery, control modules etc. All this needs to be designed with sustainability in focus.

 

Thermal Management is a part of the department Thermal & Hybrid within the unit Propulsion & Energy. The department is divided into five groups, working closely together for a complete Thermal Management system delivery, both on HW and SW side. Our group, Thermal System & Function, have ownership of Thermal Management from first architectural sketch, on HW and functional side, including concept design, to system development and ownership within our running programs. We are 14 persons with high ambitions, different ages, background, and experience. We are characterized as an open and friendly group where everyone shares their knowledge with each other.

 

We are now happy to share a great opportunity to join or dynamic team as a Senior Controls Engineer within Thermal Management. If you’re looking for a position in which you will be the key person for the development of control strategies for the Thermal Management system - you’ve found it! 

 

What you’ll do
In this role you will work predominantly in the early phase with concept development of control strategies and system design in close cooperation with other technical areas, attributes, and aspects. Within the group, you will find yourself commonly collaborating with our Function architect, System responsible and Technical Expert. Also your closest colleagues within the group, responsible for the implementation of system design and function realization are key colleagues of yours. One important internal interface within the department is towards our Thermal SW group, responsible for controls, diagnostics, and calibration, where the implementation for the control strategies will be developed. Amongst your other colleagues you will find system architects, SW developers, CAE engineers and Component owners. You will play an important role in creating the concepts of our control strategy for the thermal management system, for requirements’ fulfilment and energy optimization. 

 

Your responsibilities: 
In the overall picture; as senior controls engineer, you are an advisor and competence center for control models. You define and restrict control concepts and lead the breakdown of functional concepts to verified working strategies. You also serve as a link between high-level concepts and System design, towards controls SW implementation. 

 

In addition:
•    You act as an advisor and competence center both within and outside the group in terms of model-based optimization, numerical analysis and statistical methods
•    You collaborate freely, efficiently and easily with your counterparts within the Unit, but also outside the home organization towards our interfacing units
•    You define and document the analysis methods for the group’s / department’s analysis need, for your specific competence area
•    You have function- and optimization development responsibility within our technical area, over all BEV platforms, to secure the quality of the control model concepts
•    You coach your colleagues within system design and function realization within control theory and optimization
•    You act as a mentor in the organization within control theory

 

What you’ll bring
We believe you have a MSc or PhD within mechatronics, electrical or electronics. We also believe you have demonstrated experience from controls technology, theoretically and from practical applications, together with knowledge within function- or software development best practices. You have 4-6 years working experience within relevant field. You are fluent in English, both written and spoken and have a driver’s license (B) which is valid in Sweden. 

 

In this role, collaboration is key, and you excel as a team player, driven by a genuine belief in the value of inclusivity. You have a great technical interest and curiosity, good analytic skills and approach tasks in a structured and supportive manner. Your energy is contagious, and you eagerly seek cross-functional solutions alongside colleagues and other teams. While detail-oriented, you also have a holistic perspective, able to visualize the broader picture.
