With the rapid development of electrification, the design of Li-ion batteries has received increased attention in recent years. With the battery being the heaviest and most expensive component in a Battery Electrified Vehicle (BEV) the optimization of battery components design is critical to both the sustainability and the profitability of any BEV. Battery structural components also influence durability and quality, affecting the expected lifetime of the vehicle. These aspects make it important to continuously improve the design where possible.

As Master thesis student you will be working on the development of the battery design. You will have the opportunity to cooperate with colleagues within the traction battery ART, other supporting Arts as well as various stakeholders for battery design. You will be part of a highly motivated team working with CAD tools where there is a strong interest in creating new insights.

In the master thesis project ‘Design optimization of battery components’ you will be working on analyzing the specific design of battery structural components from the perspective of material utilization, weight, and manufacturability.   

The project will build on the experience of the concept design team with the aim of proposing improvements to an existing design. To reach further there is a need for a holistic view on the design and function of the battery components where different design aspects and alternatives will be evaluated and compared.

The project will include:
•    Identification of key functionality and constraints of the existing design
•    Evaluation of CAD models and cost impact of different designs
•    Identification of improvements of the existing design


We are looking for motivated students pursuing a Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering. A genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical and communication skills, both oral and written English, are needed. The ideal candidate has a background in analytical work preferably including experience in CATIA. Further, you have a significant interest in programming and python in particular.


•    The duration of the Thesis is 20 weeks
•    The Thesis starts in Jan 2023 or earlier if possible.
•    30 ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor at University 
•    This thesis is suitable for 1- 2 students
