About this opportunity - Background
At Vehicle Engineering, our responsibility spans the entire chassis, interior, climate, body & exterior functions, mechanical integration, and a range of vehicle attributes with impact on design and customer experience of our complete product. Across these domains and all development cycles, we will lead an effective delivery operation on a complete level in close sync with other Engineering units, functions, and stakeholders across the company.
This thesis work is within the area of Front Airbag and Steering Wheel at Occupant Safety.
Today, the main technology for determining driver hand presence on the steering wheel is capacitive sensing. The technology is, despite high efforts, challenging to implement in vehicles.
Scope of the thesis work
The objective is to identify and review other potential technologies. What are the benefits and drawbacks, and what are the hurdles to implementation.
- Benchmark of potential technologies and methods, both within and outside the automotive field. Also include scientific developments.
- Establish the usage and robustness requirements for the hands-on detection in a vehicle.
- Identify potential candidates, and if possible, develop early physical Proof-of-concept.
What you'll bring
2 innovative and hands-on master students with the ability to utilize new technologies. Preferably, engineering master students within the area of mechanical, automotive, physics, or similar.
Duration
- Tentative proposed thesis work period: 19th January 2026 to 26th of June 2026 (dates can be flexible with +/- 7 days)
- Academic credits: equivalent to 30 ECTS
- Number of students: 2 students
- The thesis work will primarily be conducted on-site at our office in Torslanda, Gothenburg.
