Master Thesis Work - Automated Gap and Flush Verification Procedure
Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars
Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. Through your thesis work you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!
About this opportunity - Background
At Vehicle Engineering, our responsibility spans the entire chassis, interior, climate, body & exterior functions, mechanical Integration, and a range of vehicle attributes with impact on design and customer experience of our complete product. Across these domains and all development cycles, we will lead an effective delivery operation on a complete level in close sync with other Engineering units, functions, and stakeholders across the company.
This thesis work is within the area of Perceived Quality at the Aesthetics & Convenience attribute section.
In automotive design, ensuring optimal fit and finish between components is critical for both functionality and aesthetics since it has a high impact on the overall quality perception and craftsmanship of the car. Thus, it is essential to have control over the gap and flush setup throughout the whole vehicle project, since there is always an element of constant refinement. Given the complexity of modern vehicles - with hundreds of component interfaces - manual measurement to verify the status is inefficient and error-prone.
The goal of this thesis is to develop a methodology and a feasible solution to automate the measurement of gaps and flush between CAD geometries. The solution should:
• Identify and evaluate component interfaces.
• Automate the detection and measurement of gaps and flush.
• Compare results with the requirement specification
Scope of the thesis work
• Compare and evaluate software tools (e.g., CATIA and Teamcenter Visualization).
• Analyze existing CAD models and other available geometry data for parts and assemblies.
• Develop scripts/macros to automate interface detection and measurement.
• Validate the method.
Expected Deliverables:
• A documented methodology for automated gap and flush measurement.
• A verification output solution giving a status overview of all relations.
• A working solution interacting with the currently available CAD data is best suited for this objective.
• Evaluation report of software tools and integration feasibility.
• Final thesis report and presentation.
What you'll bring
• Highly analytical and a drive to succeed in what you set out to accomplish.
• Master’s degree students in: Design & Product Development, Computer Science, Engineering Mathematics and Computational Science, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
• Proficiency in CATIA or other CAD tools for geometry handling and scripting.
• Ability to develop automation scripts (e.g., CATIA macros, Python, VBScript).
• Geometric modeling fundamentals, mathematical & mathematical geometry concepts.
• This thesis project requires that you be on site at the office in Volvo Cars Gothenburg.
Duration
• Tentative proposed thesis work period: 19th January 2026 to 26th of June 2026 (dates can be flexible with +/- 7 days)
