Master Thesis - Iso Geometrical Analysis (IGA) for Crash Simulations

Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars
Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. Through your thesis work you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

About this opportunity - Background

Lately, Iso Geometrical Analysis (IGA) has gained increased popularity in the automotive CAE industry. The main idea of IGA is to use the same mathematical description for geometry in both computer-aided design (CAD) and finite element analysis (FEA). This means that the step of discretizing geometry into a conventional FEA mesh can be skipped.

There are many attractive benefits to the implementation of IGA in the automotive industry. Since the same NURBS-based geometry description can be used both for CAD and CAE, the development time can be reduced. Furthermore, in theory, a higher predictive accuracy and an increased efficiency should be achievable for the same size of the discretization.

This master's thesis aims to evaluate Iso Geometrical Analysis potential and maturity for automotive crash simulations. This will be done by the implementation of IGA in simulations of various complexities, ranging from simple material test specimens up to full vehicle crash simulations.

Scope of the thesis work

•    Study Iso Geometrical modeling on both simple test specimens and more complex geometries.
•    Insert an Iso Geometry modelled part in full vehicle crash simulation.
•    Study eventual differences between Iso Geometrical and current continuous modeling techniques.
•    Propose improvements in Iso Geometrical Analysis capability and current way of working.

What you'll bring

•    Student in Applied Mechanics.
•    Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis.
•    Knowledge and/or interest in Material Science and/or Material Mechanics.

FE Simulations will be done using the LS-DYNA FE Software.

Duration

•    The work will be carried out at Volvo Cars Safety Centre during spring 2026.
•    30 academic credits in agreement with your Thesis Advisor at the University
•    This thesis is to be conducted by 1 or 2 Students working in pair.
