Doctoral Program - Multiscale modeling
Help us shape the future of mobility
At Volvo Cars, we’re on an exciting journey to shape the future of mobility. We’re building direct relationships with customers, and aim to be a leader in new technology. It’s so exciting – we’re well on our way on our journey towards full electrification. Join us and become a part of our vision for the future – a future that's both exciting and a catalyst for positive change.
Let's introduce ourselves
At Volvo Cars Safety Centre, 200 highly skilled professionals strive every day to make the world a safer place for vehicle occupants, their loved ones, and the people around them. Covering the Safety and Durability attributes with knowledge and analysis, we bravely lead the way for safety in support of the company’s inspiring purpose: to provide freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way.
On our ambitious journey when it comes to electrification and sustainability, we have initiated research projects around High-Pressure-Die-Casting structures (HPDC). Large components using HPDC offer many opportunities. Through proper management of the material's chemical composition, process parameters, and component design, it is possible to customize the microstructure and associated mechanical properties to satisfy the design specifications of components. However, a heterogeneous microstructure often includes imperfections. It is therefore important that engineering models, typically used for crash and fatigue calculations, predict the response of the material while explicitly accounting for the microstructure.
What you will do
Your major responsibilities are to pursue scientific research including your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing.
The research will be based around how finite element-based simulation tools can be developed to accurately represent cast aluminum microstructures, incorporating grain morphology and statistical distributions of defects derived from experimental analyses. The goal of the project is to establish a generalised and efficient multiscale modelling framework to enable CAE crash analysis of large HPDC structure.
What you will bring
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 300 higher education credits in applied mechanics, materials engineering, or similar.
For this position, it is an advantage to have a strong background with some experience in mechanics or materials engineering with an emphasis on calculus using Finite element methodology. Candidates should be interested in pursuing research in an industrial environment. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English.
You are a self-driven and result oriented team player that plans and prioritize work to meet commitments with set goals and in this you ensure ownership holding yourself accountable to meet the commitments.
You are well structured and manage complexity making sense of complex, high quantity, and sometimes contradictory information to effectively solve problems.
