Cloud Data Engineer

Who are we?
Within the Volvo Cars Commercial Digital team, we work in customer-centric product teams to make Volvo Cars business fully digital. We build products and systems for Volvo Cars customers and partners, including volvocars.com, the Volvo On Call app, Care by Volvo, online sales, customer data management, Volvo ID, retail and service tools, the Volvo Cars Developer Portal and APIs for building new innovative services.

 

The team is mainly located in Gothenburg, Stockholm and Lund, Sweden, and we also have teams in the US, India and in China. Many of the people you will be working with have experience from start-ups and global tech companies such as Spotify, Google, Ericsson, Microsoft, Tradera, Klarna, and King.

The Challenge
At Volvo Cars we are undergoing a huge transformation in our commercial system and how we do business.  It is a fundamental shift from a wholesale business model to a consumer business model. A prerequisite for this transformation to happen, is to deeply change the way we view, work with and manage consumer data.   

 

We are now looking for Cloud and Data Engineers to develop and deploy our emerging solutions and services for managing and utilizing commercial and consumer data. 

 

As a development engineer you will be focusing on cloud backend development of consumer data centric applications and services. You will work in a group of skilled Product Owners, Architects, data analysts, Data Engineers, and experts, who are currently engaged in enabling Volvo Cars to offer world class customer experiences, by being truly driven by consumer data. 

 

This position can be in either Gothenburg or Lund.


You and your skills

To succeed in this role you need to have a minimum of 3 years of work experience developing back-end software, designing and writing code, possibly served as a tech lead.  Experience of developing mobile applications is preferred.

 

You have gained strong software design skills and knowledge of design patterns. A bachelor’s degree or similar is a merit. Expert in back-end development, including data models, persistence layers, back-end services (REST APIs), app frameworks, caching and messaging services, as well as using 3rd party APIs. Understanding of Service Oriented Architectures. Knowledge of designing data models, using ORMs/data access layers, and SQL and noSQL databases. Strong understanding of multiple languages - at least 2 of these must be Java, C#, Scala, or JavaScript. Experience of developing code with AWS, Azure, or other major cloud providers. Beneficial to have experience with CI/CD.
 

  • BSc degree or higher in engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Master the English language both spoken and in writing
  • Driven and self-motivated, with a strong delivery orientation
  • Positive Doer mindset, focuses on opportunities as well as risks and challenge
  • Problem solver, with good analytical skills
  • Curious, enjoys breaking new ground and trying out new ideas. 
  • Experience in working with cloud backend service and application development in modern microservice architecture
  • API design and development
  • Back-end development for web/cloud/services tied to user account and data
  • Examples of stuff we use:
    • SW Languages: Java (Spring)
    • Frameworks: Docker, Kubernetes, Spring 
    • Infrastructure: AWS, Azure
    • Databases: MDM Platfoms (xDM etc)  Casandra etc (NoSQL), MySQL, Oracle, MongoDB
    • Middleware: Kafka, JMS, IBM MQ, MQTT
    • Tools: CI/CD Pipelines, GIT or similar, maven, Eclipse 
    • Test automation: Unit test frameworks, Component test frameworks
    • Monitoring: Splunk, Grafana, Prometheus
    • Architecture: Micro Service Architecture, MasterData Management
    • Development methodology principles: SAFe, Scrum, Lean, Kanban, DevOps
    • Automation: Python, Powershell, Ansible
