Site SQM Engineer - Propulsion

The Site SQM Engineer is responsible for an allocated set of supplier manufacturing locations. The engineer's activities are focused on product and process performance at external suppliers, supporting both new programs and running production.

The role interacts closely with Volvo Cars R&D, the SPL SQM (Supplier Quality Management), Buyers and Production plants IMQ and Resident SQM.

Completing activities included in the Site SQM Engineer's role requires frequent travel to suppliers' sites. The extent of this travel depends upon various conditions, including the suppliers' segmentation, specific type of activities, urgent situations, and distance to supplier(s).

The Site SQM Engineer's main tasks are to lead or support within the areas of:

Main Tasks

  •  Sourcing for Quality
  • Support Commodity Business Plan
  • Assess potential of suppliers prior sourcing
  • Support sourcing with Quality data analysis
  • Quality assurance of new vehicle launch
  • Drive quality assurance process with suppliers APQP
  • Drive quality execution of manufacturing related issues at suppliers
  • Drive adequacy of related action plans
  • Drive capability (Cpk) of supplier processes
  • Review & approve PSW packages according to PPAP hand book
  • Analyse capacity of manufacturing lines at suppliers
  • Provide supplier on-site assistance as required
  • Supplier site Improvement
  • Perform manufacturing site assessments at suppliers (incl. resolution of open actions)
  • Perform LEAN deployment assessment at suppliers (incl. resolution of open actions)
  • Drive continuous improvement and resolution of systemic site concerns
  • Develop work plan to reduce number of quality incidents
  • Schedule and conduct reviews with supplier management as required
  • Review & follow up on supplier work plan to achieve Volvo Cars Quality through Excellence Award
  • 8-D / Concern Resolution, Warranty Reduction
  • Review 8Ds, ensure timely resolution, verify corrective actions, and cascade lessons learned
  • Support warranty cost reduction programs in case of supplier responsible concerns (when applicable)


Competence Requirements

  • MSc and/or equivalent work experience
  • Knowledge of quality methods used in automotive industry (e.g. APQP, PPAP, FMEA, 8D)
  • Knowledge and experience in area of metal processing (e.g. Die Casting, Forging, Stamping, CNC Machining, Welding, Heat Treatment)
