Lead DevOps Engineer

Volvo Cars is on an ambitious journey to re-define the customer experience in automotive through digital technology.  While Volvo is pushing the boundaries on several fronts – autonomous driving, vehicle electrification, cutting-edge vehicle engineering design, and more – some of the most exciting action is happening in our Digital organization.  


This role is within our Consumer Digital team, which is using digital to reinvent the experience of becoming a Volvo customer. There’s no reason the experience of buying a car should be painful and difficult – it should be as enjoyable and exciting as actually having a new car. That is our mission. We have a successful program of selling automobile subscriptions through our online Care By Volvo service, running in US and Europe markets and preparing to launch in even more markets worldwide. We are looking for enthusiastic professionals who have an interest in automobiles and excited what the future holds in this industry, to join our team in Sunnyvale, California.


This role will be in the DevOps team which is building the infrastructure & tools for the development of software and services for consumer applications that reaches Volvo’s customers. The position is located in Volvo Cars’ Sunnyvale, CA Software Technology Center.



  • You have start-up experience where you have supported rapid prototyping efforts and have catalysed product development in a fast paced, fluid environment
  • You have a strong knowledge of the role DevOps plays in being an essential part of the software development team and standing up and supporting a variety of servers and services in a cloud environment
  • You are also responsible for monitoring, alerting/notifications, log analysis and diagnosing system issues, and responding to site issues. 
  • You also would need to be involved in Technical POCs, setting up Postgres & Cassandra/mongoDB database clusters on-prem and/or cloud, need to have experience on RDBMS (PostGres) and noSQL (Cassandra, MongoDB) technologies.
  • You are responsible for designing, maintaining and monitoring Postgres and Cassandra/MongoDB(nosql) databases running in our cloud environments, helping with optimizations and efficiency upgrades.  Because we are a multi-cloud environment, you should have solid experience in either AWS or Azure DevOps, *and* also be interested in learning core areas of Azure and AWS, in order to provide support for both cloud environments.


Required Skills:

  • Experience as a hands-on DevOps engineer, managing provisioning, configuration, deployment, and monitoring of a variety of servers, services and logs in a cloud environment.
  • Knowledge of system architecture, networking, and services, including databases (SQL and NoSQL), caching, messaging, search, and various open source services.
  • Understanding of Service Oriented Architecture
  • Skilled in Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) / Certified
  • Have in past set up, operated, and scaled a relational database in the cloud
  • CloudFormation template and automation for database operations
  • Database management, designing, implementing, and maintaining the database system
  • Install, configure, troubleshoot, and maintained  database systems in Cloud
  • Understanding of disaster recovery and database backup procedures
  • Understanding of data import/ export procedures
  • Automation through shell scripts/python to automate DB setup, day-to-day operations
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies and associated tools, including DevOps integration with Slack


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM field, Master’s preferred
  • Minimum 12 years work experience in Software development with at least 7 years as a DevOps professional
  • Experience with different databases and data technologies etc.
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum methodologies and associated tools (Jira) 


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A passion for cars and developments in the auto industry
  • Expertise in and experience supporting & developing consumer-facing products
  • Experience with cloud native databases, RDS
  • Exposure with automated provisioning of cloud resources
  • Exposure/knowledge of working with multi-cloud environments
  • Understanding of CMS systems, such as Drupal or Sitecore, and E-Commerce systems
  • Experience with mobile applications
  • Advanced knowledge of database structure, database security issues
  • Provided end-to-end technical support and problem resolution
  • Monitor and optimize system performance using index tuning, disk optimization, and other methods.
  • Knowledge of data replication methodologies across data centres
  • Set user privileges within the database environment.
  • Database Admin/DevOps experience in:
    • RDBMS
      • Postgres
    • NoSQL Database
      • MongoDB, Cassandra, Couchbase
