Mobile App Backend Maintenance & QA Specialist (Volvo Cars App)

The Volvo Cars App team sits within our Digital organization and is responsible for the development and localization of features and functionality in the Americas region within the companion mobile application. Globally, we support the rollout, support & development of new products and services that have a US market specific functionality.

 

As a Backend Maintenance & QA Specialist, you would need to have at least 3+ years of experience in the maintenance of backend infrastructure and code along with testing. In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining the backend that the development team has created for a globally developed mobile application. This is accompanied with a QA responsibility which has the expectation of regular review of the end-to-end solution, all its associated logs, and the development of alerting and monitoring solutions.

Your primary focus will be reviewing the overall architecture of the backend on a regular basis to maintain various dependencies/libraries, keeping everything up to date. As part of doing this, your growing familiarity with the codebase will allow you to develop application monitoring for the services we are building as well as conducting testing/review of newly developed functions. Working across different organizational layers including the business & global R&D teams, a thorough understanding of and responsibility for our systems and their dependencies will drive success in this role.

  • You enjoy tackling interesting, complicated problems and following them through to the end.
  • Collaborate effectively with engineers, product, and management to articulate identified improvement points
  • Expertise on maintaining backend infrastructure and updating dependencies against vulnerabilities and emerging best practices.
  • Data driven, regularly reviewing metrics and proactively seeking out opportunities for improvement
  • Comfortable in holding various internal and external stakeholders to their SLAs based on data
  • Enjoy working as part of a greater team and driving a project towards a delivery date

 

What You'll Do

  • Regular review of infrastructure, dependencies, and base image – making relevant updates
  • Solve complex problems and proactively identify and mitigate risks
  • Create and execute upon test plans, test scenarios, and bug reports.
  • Develop monitoring and alerting applications
  • Hold external and internal partners accountable to SLAs and performance metrics
  • Utilize databases, logs to provide performance/utilization metrics to stakeholders

 

Skills

  • Skilled with updating dependencies and libraries within an existing environment
  • Some familiarity with Java, Spring Boot, PostgresSQL (or similar database experience)
  • Knowledge of how to set-up alerting and monitoring: Grafana, Apica, PagerDuty, Sentry, Kubernetes
  • Ability to read logs and potentially identify where a bug originates
  • Experience & comfort in smoke testing mobile applications throughout release lifecycles
  • Understanding of CI/CD and a SCRUM/AGILE way of working.
