Development of new vehicles, including technologies such as automated driving and electrification is challenging the test, verification, and validation environment at proving grounds. Reliability and durability must be of highest level as a fault could have catastrophic impact on road safety. To ensure the reliability and durability, the vehicles must pass intense testing in a challenging environment, normally in a closed proving ground environment. The tracks at Hällered have a high traffic load and is exposed to wear and tear which can affect the quality of the testing and even safety. There is therefore important to ensure that the tracks are in a good condition to be able to perform high quality and repeatability testing.

The task is to propose a method and develop an algorithm to detect wear and tear on the test tracks to be able to determine the exact wear to be used to predict the maintenance need for the tracks. This will be carried out by using state-of-the-art LiDAR instruments to generate a point-cloud which will be used to feed the algorithm. The output from the algorithm should give an indication on how the condition of the track have changed over time.

• Methodology development 


The main output from the thesis project should be the following deliverables: 
• A well-documented software written in python, with easily changeable algorithms parameters and easily interpretable output. 
• Demonstration of the end-to-end solution on the test track. 
• A report describing relevant findings, e.g., connected to the key points above

A Requirement for this position is that you are currently enrolled in an ongoing Bachelor of Science program and possess Driver license B. Related areas for this thesis are software, civil engineering, and systems. This thesis work will require you to be on-site, at Volvo Cars, Proving Ground Hällered, Sweden.

Proposed/estimated work period is starting January and up to 6 months forward in a pair of 2 students. 15 ECTS (Bachelor academic credits).
