About us

Perceived Quality (PQ) is an attribute area within the department Craftsmanship & Durability. The department consists of Material Centre, Strength & Endurance Centre and Craftsmanship Centre. PQ belongs to Craftsmanship and consists of four sub attributes (Geometry & Appearance, Material Quality, Illumination and Paint & Surface Finish).

To secure a successful product in line with the Volvo Cars brand values, it is of vital importance in the development process to understand the customer as their needs sets the scope for requirements and requirement levels. Furthermore, as Perceived Quality at Volvo Cars mainly concerns the visual aspect of our senses, it is also essential to have a deeper understanding of customer behavior and customer interactions with our products.



This project will focus on analyzing customer interaction patterns gathered through tracking of the users using AR & VR to expand and increase the validity of current Perceived Quality customer interaction models. The thesis work will be carried out in close collaboration with the Volvo Cars user experience team that focuses on AR & VR applications.



The thesis work will include the following parts:

Mapping of use-cases from all sub-attribute areas that may be relevant.

Prepare a setup for data collection and management applying the hardware and software intended to support this thesis work, e.g. AR/VR, Unity software environment and data management.

Plan and execute experiment for user interaction patterns.

Post-process, analyze and compile data, including visualization of resulting patterns in Unity.

Document and implement results and findings in current setup.
We are looking for students with the following profiles:

Highly analytic and a drive to succeed in what you set out to accomplish. You should have a genuine interest in programming, AR/VR, and product visualization.

Master’s degree students in: Design & Product Development, Computer Science, Engineering Mathematics and Computational Science, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

Programming skills are required.

Experience in Unity, CATIA V5 and AR/VR applications and big data analysis is very valuable.
Period: 1 semester, 30 ECTS points.
Project start: January 2020.
Number of students: Suitable for two students.
