Thesis Worker: CFD Simulation of a Degassing Battery Cooling Plate
Thesis work at Volvo Cars
Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars (VCC) by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!
Background
Battery cooling plate is a key component in a liquid-cooled system of electrical vehicle. An optimal design of a cooling plate needs to take into account different aspects when it comes to energy efficiency and effective heat transfer. One source of poor local conductance is trapped air in the cooling system formed during the coolant filling process. These local air pockets can hinder coolant absorbing heat from battery cells and create hot spots in the system. Therefore in Volvo Cars we have a system requirement that the battery cooling plate should be able to self-degas at a certain flow rate.
Scope
The aim of this thesis is to improve the current simulation method in STARCCM+ by validation against existing test data with transparent cooling plate. You will investigate different modelling aspects such as multiphase modelling as well as time and space resolution in order to find a balance between accuracy and numerical effort.
You will have the opportunity to cooperate with colleagues within the traction battery ART, other engineers within VCC as well as suppliers of cells and modules. You will be part of a team where everyone is included and collaborates well.
Profile
We are looking for students pursuing a Master of Science degree in applied mechanics, applied physics, automotive engineering, or similar, to qualify. A genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical and communication skills, both in oral and written English, are needed. The ideal candidate has a background in CFD/CHT analysis work preferably by modelling with STARCCM+. Further, you have a big interest in battery electric vehicles.
