Digital Forensic Investigation of Automotive Systems


The focus of this thesis will be on identifying forensically relevant data in automotive systems and communications, together with defining appropriate acquisition and investigation mechanisms that are agnostic to the underlying system specification.

We are looking for students who are interested in computer and network security and have knowledge in embedded security or digital forensics.

This Master thesis should answer the following key questions:

a) What type of information are forensically relevant for the automotive systems and what type of proactive measures support forensic investigation?

b) How to ensure the authenticity and admissibility of the collected and stored data?

c) What type of measures may have potential influence on the data (e.g. removing the power supply may result in volatile data being lost)?

d) What are the challenges of transforming the collected evidence into data that can by interpreted by human investigator?

e) What forensic tools are applicable to automotive use-cases?


The work in this thesis will be carried out as a collaboration between Volvo Cars and D&IT at Chalmers. After a successful thesis project, students will gain experience in the field of automotive cybersecurity and digital forensics. This thesis work requires interaction with a team of engineers from Volvo Cars which will provide the students an opportunity to gain insight into how research is conducted in the automotive industry.



Order to support a forensic investigation, these systems must be extended to log additional information, especially those related to security events. A digital forensic enabled vehicle should be able to log information about software updates, attached devices (e.g. USB stick or phone connected via Bluetooth), failed authentication and authorization attempts, failure in security mechanisms (e.g. IDS or security log system downtimes) and many more.

Cyberattack on vehicles has increased in recent years! As a result, there is a need for conducting forensic investigations in the event of post-incident inquiries (driven by police, insurance companies, etc.). Given that cybersecurity is a relatively new criteria in designing automotive systems, most of the existing self-monitoring and diagnostic systems in modern vehicles only monitor safety related events (e.g. random component failures).



• One or two MSc. student(s) in their final year with background in Computer Science or similar areas

• Knowledge in cybersecurity, and preferably digital forensics

• English language fluency, written and spoken
