Background
At Volvo Cars, customer experience drives the development of our products, and we have the responsibility to deliver transparent data for real driving conditions. The aerodynamics of new electric vehicles has become a key feature to increase the vehicles performance and range, therefore, the prediction of accurate range values is tightly dependent on the accuracy and trustworthiness of these measurements. At present, the majority of aerodynamic testing on road vehicles is based on wind tunnel measurement where the low turbulence level seldom represents the real flow conditions on the road. The main reason for this is that road vehicle aerodynamics historically grew out of the aeronautics industry, where a low turbulence level was well justified and representative of the flow. The adaptation of those wind-tunnels into low-speed ones, carried over a very low-turbulence design criterion which makes comparisons across test facilities easier, but at the same time, creates a substantial gap between road flow conditions and controlled environments. A second but still critical reason is that the "on-road" flow condition has never been thoroughly characterized, and only a very small body of research has been developed around this topic so far.

 

Scope
This thesis aims to investigate the implications of an on-road flow applied to the development of our cars.

The work can be divided in two main tasks, (i) one being the investigation of real flow conditions and its

implementation in the current numerical method or wind tunnel facility. (ii) The second will mainly focus on the study of the implications of real flow condition on the aerodynamic performance of cars, when compared to the measurement methods and environments used today.

 

Do you fit the profile
The work may involve both wind tunnel experiments and CFD work; engineering background with an inclination toward fluid dynamics or aerodynamics is required. The profile we are looking for has preferably conducted practical engineering projects during his/her studies. Ideally, CFD work and design of prototypes are highly considered for this position. Good python programming skills is considered as a plus. This thesis work requires innovative, proactive and highly motivated students, ready to design/build experimental rigs, and with good skills in data analysis and report writing.

You should have the possibility to work on site most of their time and have a regular driving license valid in Sweden.

 

Duration

  • The duration for this thesis work is 20 weeks.
  • 30 ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University
  • The work will start: 17-01-2022
  • This thesis is to be conducted by 2 Students working in pair.
