Background

At Volvo Car Corporation, we are focusing on pure electric vehicles. In the CAE team at the Propulsion Department of Research and Development we support and guide the development of the latest Gearboxes and Electric Machines.

The combination of high torque and compact installations sets new targets for the driveline. Durability and performance of the gearbox are important attributes with high focus. It is crucial to maintain adequate lubrication of the mechanical components to attain the best possible attributes.

 

Scope

Visualization of flow inside a Gearbox is important for both validation of CFD simulations and as inspiration for new lubrication concepts. This project consists of three parts:

  1. Construction of a Gearbox for electric machines with transparent parts, allowing optical access to the gears and bearings.
  2. Optical measurements of the flow field and comparison to CFD simulations.
  3. Follow up with calibrated CFD model to comply with results.

 

Profile

The successful candidate is expected to be a master student from mechanical engineering and courses in numerical analysis and CFD & heat transfer. We believe that you are an analytical person and are capable of working independently with responsibility. Since the thesis consist of both a simulation part and a more abstract phase with physical testing it would be of high value if the student had strong abilities in both areas. You should have previous knowledge of physical measurements and analytical tools. We see that you have experience with CFD software and possess a problem solving-mindset.

 

The thesis requires the student to be physically presented in Gothenburg Volvo Cars Corporation from time to time.

 

Duration

  • The work will start in January 2021, to be discussed
  • The duration for this thesis work is 20 weeks.
  • 30 ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University
  • This thesis is to be conducted by 1 student
