Thesis Work: Multiphase Machines: Performance Evaluation for Automotive Applications
Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars
Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization, you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business-critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable, and personal way – from day one!
About this opportunity – Background
The Electric Drive department 97700 at Volvo Cars is proud of being responsible for designing and delivering system solutions and functionality for the inverters, electric machine, and transmission, in our electrified vehicles.
Our vision is to become “Leading in electrification” and we are aiming to contribute to world class energy efficiency, E-machine functionality, sustainability, customer satisfaction and best performance and drivability, to all our future products.
Scope of the thesis work
Multiphase machines, also known as polyphase machines, are electrical machines that operate with more than three phases. These machines are gaining popularity due to their enhanced performance characteristics, which include improved efficiency, reduced torque ripple, and fault tolerance.
One of the primary advantages of multiphase machines is their ability to continue operating even if one or more phases fail, making them highly reliable for critical applications. They are commonly used in various industries, including aerospace and energy, where reliability and efficiency are paramount. Additionally, they are gaining interest in the automotive sector.
This thesis intends to investigate the feasibility and performance of multiphase drives, highlighting the benefits and drawbacks of this technological solution for automotive applications. First, the student will evaluate the performance of multiphase machines, including torque and torque ripple, efficiency, noise, and vibration. Then, the student will investigate the challenges and opportunities that multiphase drives bring from a system perspective through system modelling and fault tolerance analysis, along with an evaluation of the cost of the electric drive system.
The activity will combine the use of Finite Element Analysis (MotorCAD and JMAG), modelling tools for dynamic systems such as Simulink, and post-processing tools such as Phyton and Matlab
Activities we foresee that should be done during this thesis work are:
1. Literature study.
2. Work content as described above.
3. Production of a final report and presentation.
What you´ll bring
You are studying M.Sc. Electrical Power engineering, or similar. Understanding in Electric machines, Power electronics, Machine control, knowledge on materials, hands on Python/MATLAB Simulink and FEA tools are highly valuable.
