Background
Tire rolling resistance is one of the single largest inputs, contributing to approximately 25% of the total vehicle energy loss.  It has a direct influence on range and impact on customers’ perception of the vehicle. Minimizing rolling resistance in actual driving situations (so called real-world rolling resistance) is the key step towards maximizing range and sustainability.

Rolling resistance is the force that resists the motion of rolling. Under vehicle loading, the tires are deformed and generate energy loss. Currently, the globally accepted practice is to certify tire rolling resistance for an in-house laboratory specification (Ref ISO 28580), with standard drum dimension, surface and thermal condition. The ISO value of rolling resistance provides a common ground for tire comparison, but it neglects the influence from various external factors, which include vehicle load, speed, tire temperature, road roughness and driving maneuvers. For example, the ISO standard only accounts for the warmed-up tires in stabilized condition, while in real-world scenario, tires typically do not get warmed up due to short inter-city driving, which results in much higher real-world rolling resistance and energy loss.  

 

Scope
In order to lead in real-world vehicle energy efficiency, there is a pending need for Volvo to establish a method to evaluate and set criteria on rolling resistance based on its real-world value. To this end, the thesis will include

  1. Literature survey of real-world rolling resistance
  2. Statistical analysis of Volvo ‘real-world’ drive cycle
  3. Explore measurement method of tire rolling resistance for various external factors
  4. Analysis of measurement data and calibrating numerical rolling resistance models
  5. Correlation study between ISO rolling resistance and measured rolling resistance
  6. Create strategy to maximize customer experience using real-world rolling resistance data
     

Objectives
Establish a method to evaluate and set criteria on rolling resistance based on its real-world value.

 

Profile
The successful candidates are expected to be master students from mechanical engineering and/or engineering mathematics. You should be self-motivated and explorative. You have a strong mathematical and analytical background and an interest in practical application of your knowledge in mechanical engineering.

 

The thesis requires the students to be physically presented in Gothenburg Volvo Cars Corporation to perform the experiments.

 

Duration

  • The work will start in January 2021 
  • The duration for this thesis work is 20 weeks.
  • 30 ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University
  • This thesis is to be conducted by either 1 or 2 Students working in pair.
