The Autonomous Drive and Pilot assist function team purpose is to take the lead in safe, customer valued and purposeful functions for Autonomous Driving (AD). We design the customer functions with high attention to customer interaction, we develop the functions in collaboration with suppliers and we integrate, verify and validate that the customer experience is achieved as intended. Our autonomous technology for AD and Pilot assist functions will take relaxed and safe car journeys to a new level in; this is the future of driving and mobility that will impact the whole society! Active chassis control systems provide great opportunities for enhanced the comfort of autonomous vehicle platforms. The task, for 2 students working together, is to run the simulations searching the potential solutions for minimizing discomfort within vehicle active chassis control techniques. The study will include the design of MIMO + MPC controllers in Matlab/Simulink for different active chassis control systems (Integrated chassis control) to control the vehicle’s 6 degrees of freedom. Some examples of chassis control systems are listed below:

  • Torque Vectoring with regards to our electrification strategy. The ability to individually control multiple electric motors and the drive/brake torque distribution, enables customisation of the handling/comfort response of the vehicle according to the subjective feel preferences of different passengers.
  • Rear wheel steering
  • Active Suspensions
  • Active Anti-roll bars etc.

The aim of the thesis is to develop the advance control strategies and algorithms in Matlab/Simulink for active chassis control and simulate & tune them under test scenarios in IPG Carmaker to demonstrate the comfort enhancement in AD vehicle platforms.



We would like you to have studied and learnt Matlab/Simulink, control theory, vehicle dynamics modelling and control applications, experience in IPG carmaker. Suitable Master’s degree students would be from Automotive Engineering, Systems, Control and Mechatronics



  • Application credits equivalent to 30 ECTS
  • SStarting date: January 2021, to be discussed
  • Estimated end date: Summer 2021
  • This is a thesis work for 2 students (preferably) working together
