Background 
For autonomous drive, the availability of sensors is a necessity, but there are a lot of factors to consider when developing a system that´s always available. At Contamination, one of our aims is to make sure that your autonomous car works the same, regardless of weather condition. 

 

The Contamiantion team is a part of Volvo cars´ Sustainability Center and we work with complete vehicle testing in the aspect of contamination. Contamination of a car could be in the form of snow, rain, mud or dust and we perform both numerical analysis as well as physical testing in the wind tunnel and at our test tracks to avoid contamination problems on future cars. 
 

Scope 
The purpose of this work is to contribute to improved water management of our future cars, specifically in proximity to sensors such as cameras and lidars which can be obstructed by water. The expected contribution consists of design and implementation of relatively simple test methods with associated simulation methods. The methods should include processes such as droplet impacts on surfaces, wetting, and formation of rivulets and liquid films. The idea is that the physical tests will guide in choosing appropriate simulation techniques, and later in verification and validation of these simulations. A simple test rig is currently under development and the student(s) will also have access to wind tunnels of different scales and complexity as well as simulation software such as Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and Preonlab.

 

You contribution is our future
We see that you have a background in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering and are at the end of finalizing your master degree. You have a structured approach and an interest in virtual development. Knowledge in Computational Fluid Dynamics and multiphase flows is meritorious and your English is fluent. 

 

Duration
•    The work will start in Spring 2023 but the start date can be discussed. 
•    The duration for this thesis work is 20 weeks
•    30 ECTS (Master academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University.
•    This thesis is suitable for 1-2 students.
