Development of a Sound Quality Metric for Unsteady Wind Noise

Background

Conventional metrics such as the A-weighted sound pressure and Articulation Index measured in stationary controlled conditions do not precisely represent the actual human perception to unsteady aeroacoustic noise caused by stochastic flows. Different vehicle designs with rather similar stationary noise signatures often deliver different wind noise customer experiences on-road. Sound Quality Metrics (SQM) and other relative psychoacoustic metrics such as the Effective Perceived Noise Level (EPNL) and the Psychoacoustic Annoyance model (PAmod) have the potential to better represent the actual annoyance perceived by the human ear under both stationary and time-varying flow conditions.

 

Scope

The first step of this project is to understand the flow features involved in real ambient conditions and define which SQM(s) or combined models are able to quantify these dynamic phenomena. At the completion of this step, the candidate should perform a series of wind tunnel measurements of pre-defined SQM(s) under stationary-yawed or dynamic airflow conditions and correlate those results with subjective assessments performed by a group of evaluators. As data will be taken in a non-aeroacoustic environment (PVT), the correlation should be confirmed in a aeroacoustic wind tunnel in a later phase. The objective of this project is to develop a Subjective-correlated Wind Noise SQ Metric to support the development of future Wind Noise requirements in aeroacoustics wind tunnels, increasing the match between objective NVH metrics and effective customer perception.

Profile

Required: Good knowledge in Acoustics. Desirable: Psychoacoustics/SQ, DSP, Aerodynamics, Aeroacoustics. Self standing, curious and fast learner. Driving license.
