Background
With the rapid development of electrification, the design of Li ion batteries has received increased attention in recent years. Volvo Cars has set clear targets how to become the fastest transformer in the electric premium segment. By mid-decade at least 50 of our sales are to be 50 % full-electric – then all fully electric by 2030. 

 

At the Traction Battery department our work is constantly focused on sustainability and safety.
 

One of the many exciting challenges with high-voltage systems is how to design the battery system to safely control a thermal runaway.
 

Are you up for playing an important role for our electrification journey, working with battery containment, and making our cars one of the safest in the world? Then this opportunity at the Traction Battery department within propulsion is the place for you to prosper!  
 

We are an international team working Agile, managing parts and systems such as battery tray, battery lid, brackets, gaskets, thermal protective structures, and deal with multiple joining techniques. We have the joy of doing all detail design work ourselves, it is 100% Built to Print parts and we create all technical documents enabling our supplier base to manufacture our parts.

Scope
You will be working with the system and parts which guarantees that battery thermal runaways are managed in a safe and predictable way. During your work you will get support and cooperate with your tutor and your other future colleagues within the traction battery department. You will be part of a highly motivated team where there is strong interest in creating new insights.

 

Your thesis will build on the team’s experience with the aim to propose improvements to an existing design or come up with a completely new solution! 
 

The project will include:
•    Identification of requirements, functionality and constraints
•    Benchmark competitor / state-of-the-art solutions
•    Identification and generation of new concepts 
•    Concept selection 

Key metrics will be: 
•    Function 
•    Cost
•    Manufacturability
•    TTM (time-to-market) 
•    Sustainability 

 

By performing this thesis, you will gain skills and know-how within the battery and electrification area and as well you will get the chance to work with designing parts in our CAD tool, Catia. You will also be able to practice your collaboration skills in a cross-functional environment with for example our manufacturing and purchasing colleagues. 
 

Your contribution is our future
We are looking for one or two motivated students pursuing a Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering, materials engineering, engineering physics or similar. A genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical and communication skills, both oral and written English, are needed. Competence is important, but personality is key! 

 

Duration
•    The duration of the Thesis is 20 weeks
•    The Thesis starts in Jan 2023 or earlier if possible.
•    30 ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University 
•    This thesis is suitable for 1- 2 students
