Background
The strategy of Volvo Cars is to emphasize the lifestyle of freedom to move with Autonomous Drive by making transportation personal, sustainable and safe. At the department of Safe Vehicle Automation, we embrace this paradigm shift in the automotive industry, which is moving towards the deployment of autonomous vehicles at a very fast pace. Our approach to Autonomous Driving at Volvo Cars is unique by focusing on the people and their safety and not just the technology, while at the same time working towards the vision of providing 1week quality time per year through a new Volvo Car by 2025.

 

Scope
The scope of the thesis work is to develop a robust architecture for data acquisition system that ensures high quality logging of sensor and vehicle data. Sensitivity analysis will be carried out to evaluate metrics to qualify the quality of logged sensor data. The thesis work will evaluate best practises of logging data in terms of sensor data rates, file transfer protocols, configuration management of sensors, file indexing methodologies, real-time data processing and remote access to the logging systems to ensure quality of logging is met according to requirements.  

 

Subsequently, the students will formulate and program an edge computing framework that can validate the quality of aforementioned logged data exploiting the computing power on the edge. Several research aspects will be deployed in the development of this framework. For e.g. how quick are the detection of patterns in sensor data and faster storage and transfer of data to aid real-time decisions at local nodes compared to centralized computation? Or, can the edge computing framework be used to highlight irrelevant, noisy or erroneous data? Performance of edge computing framework will be compared with the validation framework executed in centralized compute nodes.

 

Profile
We are looking for candidates with excellent academic records who are open, innovative, driven and team-players. Because of the nature of the thesis work, we are looking for students with the knowledge and background in Automotive Data Communication Buses, Data Processing and Analysis, High Performance Computing Systems and Algorithm Development. Duration

  • Tentative proposed thesis work period: 08th February 2021 to 02nd July 2021 (dates can be flexible with +/- 7 days)
  • Academic credits: equivalent to 30 ECTS
  • Number of students: 1-2 students per project (2 preferred)

 

The thesis work will be performed on-site in Volvo Cars Gothenburg.
