Performance comparison of highly environmentally friendly E-machine, with more traditional alternatives

 

Background 
The Electric Drive department 97700 at Volvo Cars is proud of being responsible for designing and delivering system solution and functionality for the inverters, electric machine, and transmission, in our electrified vehicles.

Scope
Currently, E-machines typically use NdFeB-magnets and copper wires with round cross-section. To change into conductors with rectangular cross-section, so called “hairpins”, is an ongoing process which can lead to a slightly reduced environmental impact through a better performance. Further steps can be taken by using ferrite magnets or by removing the magnets in the rotor completely. Furthermore, replacing the copper in the stator with aluminum can lead to even more reduction in the environmental impact of the E-machine.

 

Of course, such environmental improvements come with a reduced performance, and thus the machines will be a bit larger. However, from an environmental impact point of view, the total result is likely favorable when taking the environmentally more friendly materials. However, this needs to be established through an investigation of the material composition as well as its energy consumption when used in an electric vehicle application.

The main objective of the thesis work is to investigate the aluminum winding in a Synchronous reluctance machine (SynRM), with and without ferrite magnets in the rotor, which is a machine type that is highly promising from an environmental perspective. The goal is to compare such a machine with an existing ‘standard E-machine’. Both round wires and hairpins are investigated and compared. If time allows the impact of exchanging copper conductors to aluminum conductors in the stator can be investigated. 

 

The steps are:

  • Literature study of previous work done in this field. 
  • Training using FEM software and establishing the performance of the existing E-machine.
  • Designing the environmentally friendly machine alternatives and establishing their performance in terms of material and energy consumption.
  • Production of final report.

 

Profile 
You are studying Master's in Electrical engineering or similar, including E-machine courses. Your experience using FEM is highly valuable.
 
Duration 

  • The duration of the thesis work is approx. 4-5 months onsite VCC.
  • It starts in spring 2022, exact date to be discussed.
  • 30 ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your University.
  • Number of students: 1 or 2, working in pair.    
  • Computer and software will be arranged by the University and Volvo Cars.
