Thesis Work - Chaos engineering in the core system

Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars

Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by authoring your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization, you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business-critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company's purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable, and personal way – from day one!

Background

Chaos engineering is a term coined up by Netflix in 2015. It is the discipline of experimenting on a system in a production like environment to build confidence in the system's capability to withstand turbulent and unexpected conditions. This process makes for more comprehensive and effective vulnerability testing, which benefits the end customer and the organization.

Scope

We want to experiment with faults on the core system and specifically on the network domain. We want to cause network failures, or alter the network performance (e.g., jitter, latency, packet replication, etc.), and see how the system behaves. As part of this activity, we will build a modified system rig, where the core network (ethernet) performance is dynamically modified during the test runtime and assert whether the system is reliable during the non-optimal behavior duration of the core network.

Core system is the car's nervous system where all communication is happening inside the car. It consists of various processors operating in multiple different networking domains (CAN, LIN, Ethernet, etc.) and it is responsible for data (frame) routing, and decision making.

Relevant technical domains: Verification and Validation testing, System safety, Cybersecurity, System availability, System reliability
