What is in it for you?


In the automotive industry one is continuously making efforts to reduce weight of the car body. For quite some years the trends has been switch from low strength steel to high strength steel. Now the trend is to introduce lighter materials such as aluminum. To be able to design a strong, light and stiff car body, we must be confident that the simulations that are performed to support the design work comply with the final physical verification test. Because of this, there is a need for improvement of the modelling, simulation and verification process of different types of aluminums and the methods to assembly them to a complete car body. 


What you’ll do:


In this work different methods for modelling of casted aluminum is to be studied, compared and verified. 


  • Literature survey on casted and extruded aluminum
  • Literature survey on different CAE modelling techniques for semi-thick structures
  • Modelling using nonlinear FE analysis
  • Derive guidelines to the modelling process of aluminium structures


The goal is to improve the CAE modelling for aluminum structures in a car body during the car program design phase. The diploma work will include the following elements:

  • CAE modelling in Ansa
  • Nonlinear FE-analysis in LS-DYNA
  • Verification tests at both component and complete vehicle level


Do you fit the profile?


We believe that you have a background in mechanical engineering with focus on computational mechanics or similar. You should furthermore have good English skills and good knowledge and interest of FE-analysis and optimization. As a person you should be curious with an ability to work independently.




  • 20 weeks / 30 ECTS

  • The work will be performed at department 93710 Principal Engineering and 91430 Analysis&CAE Passive& Precrash, Volvo Car Corporation, Torslanda
