Measurement and modeling of E-machine losses due to manufacturing processes on steel sheets

 

Background 
The Electric Drive department 97700 at Volvo Cars is proud of being responsible for designing and delivering system solution and functionality for the inverters, electric machine, and transmission, in our electrified vehicles. Our vision is to become “Leading in electrification” and we are aiming to contribute to world class energy efficiency, E-machine functionality, sustainability, customer satisfaction and best performance and drivability, to all our future products.

 

Scope
Increasing demand for electric vehicles has put a significant stress on designing highly efficient E-machines. It is known that manufacturing methods to shape steel sheets deteriorates electromagnetic properties of their material and results in higher iron losses. Usually, these manufacturing impacts are not considered in the designing of E-machines (EM).  

 

Consequently, to reach more confident EM calculations, quantifications of the mentioned losses and predicting them in early designs of EM, is crucial. 
The main objective of the thesis work is to carry out measurements (with use of equipment like Epstein frames, Single Sheet testers) on the steel sheets used in manufacturing of E-Machines and use these measurements in modeling losses in FEM-based software.

 

Activities we foresee, that should be done during this thesis work, are: 
•    Literature study of previous work done in this field. 
•    Doing measurements on different steel sheets with various manufacturing methods.
•    Derive simulation models based on the measurements.
•    Final report which describes the measurement methods, modeling methods and limitations. 

 

Profile 
We believe you are studying Master's in Electrical engineering, Electric power engineering or similar, including E-machine courses. You have experience in using Matlab and FEM-based applications, like Comsol or Maxwell, for electromagnetic analysis and modeling. 

 

Duration 
•  The duration of the thesis work is approx. 4-5 months onsite VCC.
•  It starts in spring 2022, exact date to be discussed.
•  30 ECTS (academic credits) in agreement with your University.
•  Number of students: 1 or 2, working in pair.    
•  Computer and software will be arranged by the University and Volvo Cars.
