Background
The Electric Drive Software department at Volvo Cars is proud of being one of the most successful players within SW development for Electric Vehicles. We are responsible for delivering system solution and SW functionality for the Inverters in our electrified vehicles. Our vision is to deliver the best and most innovated functions to the market and continuously evolve our Software platform and never compromise on the safety aspects.

 

Scope
With the introduction of electrical cars, the drivetrain setup of cars has greatly changed compared to cars with combustion engines. Typical electrical drivetrains consist of an electrical machine connected with a fixed ratio transmission to the wheels. Since the electric machine operates from standstill to full speed, the likelihood of triggering mechanical oscillations which are poorly damped in the drivetrain is high. However, due to the fast and accurate control that electrical machine provide it should be possible by means of control to limit these mechanical oscillations

The main objective is to develop a concept which can both detect oscillations as well as reduces it by means of controller action.

Activities we for see that should be done during this thesis work are:

  • Literature study of what previously has been done in this field.
  • Create a generic drivetrain model which is easily can be modified to represent different        operation conditions found for a car.
  • Derive an oscillation detection function and a corresponding reduction controller.
  • Verify the concept through simulations and preform a robustness study on the concept
  • Final report which describes the selected concept and any potential issues or limitations of the method which may limit its usability.

 

 

Profile
We believe that the suitable student(s) studies mechatronics with focus control theory. Since the controller concept and validation is expected to be derived in Matlab/Simulink, experience using this SW is required.

 

Duration

  • The duration of the Thesis is approx. 4-5 Months.
  • The Thesis starts in spring 2021, to be discussed
  • 30 ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University
  • This thesis is to be conducted by either 1 or 2 Students working in pair
  • Office, computer and software will be arranged by University and Volvo Cars.
