Background
Thermal efficiency is a newly created area with Volvo cars, working to create Volvo´s most thermal efficient cars. We are part of the department Sustainability Center and our goal is to reduce the environmental aspects caused by thermal inefficiency but in the same time maximize the range for all of Volvo´s electric cars.

The team you will be joining has a long history of using 3D methods but are now aiming to widen their scope to also include 1D. This is why we need you, to help us develop new 1D methods to help Volvo increase their thermal efficiency!

 

Scope
In order to obtain an energy efficient system, it is crucial to minimize energy losses. Losses can occur as heat transfer through cooling hoses or unnecessary usage of electrical energy to run a fan or a pump. In the complex environment inside an engine bay all thermal systems interact, and it is therefore important to have methods to optimize the system towards low energy consumption. Hence the scope of this thesis is to study methods to run DOEs and optimization connected to 1D thermal system models.

 

Profile
We are looking for M.Sc. or B. Sc students in electrical or mechanical engineering, or other relevant area

You need to be fluent in English and previous experience in mathematical modeling is valued.

 

Duration

  • Starting date: February 2021 or later this year if preferred
  • Number of students: Suitable for 1-2 student.
  • ECTS: 30 per student
